This is one of the kings of grindhouse and, in my opinion, the best of the cannibal films.. Cannibal Holocaust is notorious for its graphic depictions of rape, torture, animal slaughter and cannibalism... and it's also a great film. Part shocksploitation and part social commentary, Holocaust is a movie worth watching because, unlike other grindhouse classics like Ilsa, it has depth.
A group of documentary film makers go missing in the jungles of South America so a professor of anthropology and a rescue team travel there to try to discover what happened to them. He finds their film canisters in the possession of a local tribe and has a look at the footage when he gets back to New York. What he discovers is truly horrific. These young documentary film makers tormented and tortured the locals, burned their village and even raped a young village girl in an attempt to make their "documentary" more dramatic leaving one to wonder who the real savages are. Of course, the cannibal tribes then retaliated in an even more gruesome manner.
This is truly one of the most brutal films I have ever seen. I watched this back to back with Cannibal Ferox one night and by the end, I had lost the will to live. Maybe that's why I like it so much - it's a grindhouse film that delivers what it promises. It's a showcase of the depravity of mankind.
Here is the tamest and most relaxing trailer for one of the most gruesome films ever made. Still, it is very NSFW.
