Rumors have been circulating for some time that Tarantino had put plans for a third Kill Bill movie on hold to work on another project, which might possibly be a Spaghetti Western set in the American South. A Spaghetti Southern, perhaps? Now, according to The Quentin Tarantino Archives, there is a script and a name.
At this time, little is known about Django Unchained but there are some rumors:
- It may or may not have Christoph Waltz and the original Django, Franco Nero in the cast.
- It may be about a freed slave bounty hunter in the American South.
- It may be a true Spaghetti Western modeled after the 1966 film Django.
- Production will begin in the third quarter of 2011.
- Pulp Fiction producer Stacey Sher is attached to the project.
- The release date will be in 2012. Maybe.
Coincidentally, Zoltan reviewed the original Django from 1966 only yesterday so if you want to see what the "inspiration" for this Tarantino project is check it out. I will post more details as I learn of them or you can visit the Django Unchained fan page on Facebook or The Quentin Tarantino Archives for more information.

UPDATE: Wait! We have a plot update from Westerns... All'Italiana!:
"Django is a freed slave, who, under the tutelage of a German bounty hunter (to be played by Christoph Waltz) becomes a bad ass bounty hunter himself, and after assisting Waltz in taking down some outlaws for bounty, is helped by Waltz in tracking down his wife, who is still a slave and liberating her from an evil plantation owner."

Grindhouse News: Rob Zombie's The Lords of Salem
In a previous post I had mentioned that director Rob Zombie had scrapped plans for a remake of the 1958 science fiction/horror classic The Blob in order to work on an original project. We now know what that project is.
The Lords of Salem, as you have probably guessed, is about witches and is taken from a song with the same name off Zombie's 2006 album "Educated Horses." From the little that we know about this upcoming film, a coven of witches who were executed during the witch trials of Salem, Massachusetts in 1692 return to the present day to exact their revenge on the town. According to Rob Zombie via /Film:

There were twenty people that everyone knows about – obviously all innocent – executed as witches in Salem. The basic premise of the film is that there were a further four who actually were witches, who were killed secretly, and vowed one day to return to wreak havoc on Salem’s descendants. That’s when the movie jumps ahead to the present day and things start to go wrong…Zombie has also mentioned that this will be his "bleakest" film yet, which if you've seen his other movies should have you worried... in a good way. Shooting will begin mid-April.

Grindhouse News: Suspiria Remake
If you've ever sat around thinking that Dario Argento's supernatural horror Suspiria is dated and kind of boring but it would be great if it was remade into a modern horror film, then you're an idiot but you're in luck.
Rumors have been circulating for some time that Brian Austin Green, I mean David Gordon Green, the man who brought you such terrifying films as Pineapple Express and Your Highness, is going to modernize one of the greatest horror films of all time. Now it has been confirmed. Yippee! Stoners rejoice!
According to Green, he is trying to stay faithful to the original by artfully expanding on scenes without doing a shot for shot remake, and by keeping some of the original dialogue. And now he has purchased the rights to the original musical score by Goblin which he will integrate into the new film.
If you haven't raged on your computer yet, more details can be found at SlashFilm including some of the original Goblin tracks.
Here's the trailer for the original 1977 version of Suspiria which David Gordon Green is going to poop on.

Grindhouse News: 13 Assassins Trailer Released

| 13 Assassins |
Here's the trailer for the upcoming samurai epic from one of my favorite contemporary directors. It will be in North American theaters on April 29th.
This movie is actually a remake of a 1963 film directed by Eiichi Kudo with the same name. Here's the trailer for the original film.

Are You Tired of the Expected?
This is a real movie and it's coming to a theater near you in April. At least I think it's a real movie. It does open on April Fool's Day but has already been shown at Cannes... where it received less than glowing reviews. I hope this wave of grindhouse influenced films continues as directors take their cues from Tarantino, Rodriguez, and Zombie and create their own completely ludicrous yet intriguing movies. Hobo with a Shotgun is another grindhouse throwback that comes out this spring.
Rubber is about a homicidal car tire named Robert that meanders through the California desert slaughtering people with its psychic powers. Apparently, there's also a love affair involving Robert although I'm not sure how that would work. Who could love a maniacal tire?
The trailer will give you an idea of what to expect. Of course, I'm going to see it.

This is My Mecca!
You guys confuse me. I put up a poll a little while ago to determine which of Quentin Tarantino's movies you liked the least. I thought for sure that Jackie Brown or Death Proof would easily come out on top. Instead, you guys chose Inglourious Basterds which I thought was one of his best films. Oh well.
Today we have one of the last of the fake trailers from the Tarantino/Rodriguez double feature Grindhouse. This one was directed by Rob Zombie and features one of Nicolas Cage's finest performances. As far as I know there are no plans to make this into an actual film but I'd definitely like to see it if they ever did. Not too long ago Rob Zombie was working on a remake of The Blob but it seems he abandoned that project to work on an original idea. I hope it's better than his last couple of films.
Here's the fake trailer and like most of the other trailers from Grindhouse, it's very NSFW.
Oh Udo Kier, why do you get no respect...
*UPDATE: Rob Zombie's new movie will be The Lords of Salem and will star Sheri Moon Zombie.

Don't!
One of the fake trailers from the Tarantino/Rodriguez double feature Grindhouse, which I'm pretty sure will never be made into a real movie but I wish it would be, is "Don't." It's hilarious. It's not even from a modern grindhouse director like Rob Zombie or Robert Rodriguez. It's from Edgar Wright who you may know as the director of such films as Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Will Arnett even did the voice-over on this thing. I have yet to see Scott Pilgrim but I loved Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.
Have a great Friday, everybody. I'm freezing my ass off here on the Canadian prairies so I hope it's warmer where you are.

It's Blood
In my less than humble opinion, the fake trailers were the best part of the Rodriguez/Tarantino project, Grindhouse. They were so good in fact, that people started making them into real movies. First Robert Rodriguez gave us Machete, then a couple of Canadian boys made Hobo with a Shotgun which is due out this spring. Now it's rumored that Eli Roth is making a full length feature from his awesomly disturbing Thanksgiving trailer.
Below is that fake trailer in all its NSFW glory.

The Grindhouse Roots of Kill Bill
Everything Is A Remix: KILL BILL from robgwilson.com on Vimeo.
It's common knowledge that Kill Bill is an homage to some of Tarantino's favorite movies. I stumbled upon this video yesterday which directly shows where those influences came from by comparing the scenes from Kill Bill to the parallel scenes from the original films. And of course most of those influences are grindhouse films, some of which I plan to review in the future such as Lady Snowblood and Deep Red. So stay tuned!
Also, thanks to everyone who has voted so far in the movie review poll. It looks like Mexico is still in the lead... barely. And apparently nobody gives a rat's tookus about Canadian cinema since Canada is dead last. Poor Canada.

Hobo with a Shotgun
It seems there is a Canadian addition to the lineup of new "grindhouse" films. Originally conceived and shot as a fake trailer for the Robert Rodriguez/Quentin Tarantino double bill Grindhouse, Hobo with a Shotgun has been made into a full length feature film starring a grizzled Rutger Hauer. It's nice to see some modern Canuxploitation.
About four years ago I had a dream that Rutger Hauer was a prison warden and he gave me two nickel plated .45s to stop inmates from escaping under the fence of the prison. I don't know what that means...
Anyways, the movie comes out this spring. Can't wait!
Below is the original fake trailer and the trailer for the upcoming film.
